Friends of McLaren is a community organized in 1994 by a group of
neighbors interested in revitalizing what appeared to be a deteriorating park.
Purpose
- Promote community use and support of the park
- Act as communication link between the park community and the Recreation &
Park Dept., the Rec. & Park Commission, the Board of Supervisors and the
Office of the Mayor
- Enhance and promote park safety, maintenance and passive and active
recreational opportunities
- Help to influence pro park legislation and initiatives by partnering with other Friends groups, community organization and the city wide Neighborhood Parks Council.
Current Goals and Initiatives
- Add modern theater amenities to the amphitheater to make it a venue
suitable to the broadest range of performers and performances
- Add modern trash collection, recycling and disposal system to enhance park cleanliness
- Add more native plantings to enhance the park's appearance and promote it's viability as a wildlife habitat
- Add or upgrade play structures on the park's perimeter adjacent to family housing
- Improve the park's athletic playing fields
- Add signage to help visitors become familiar with all 317 acres of the park
- Upgrade aged facilities and infrastructure
- Increase the park's maintenance staffing
- Generally advance other capital improvement projects listed for McLaren
Park in the S.F. Recreation & Park Departments city wide, ten year Capital
Improvement Program
- Develop a McLaren Park Indian Summer Music Festival
- Promote additional use of the amphitheater by a broad spectrum of
- performing artists.
- Promote the development of a new comprehensive master plan to replace the
1983 edition.
Real Time / Hands on Community Involvement
The entire community is invited to participate in hands on restoration of
the park with organized work parties on the second Saturday of the month from
10:00 a.m. to noon. The work parties meet at the amphitheater and move to a
selected area of the park.
Membership & Community Meetings
Members meet on the third Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Louis
Sutter Playground Community Center
Membership Dues
Members are asked to help defray the cost of mail, communications,
materials and supplies by paying dues of $10.00 per year
